Policosanol vs Octacosanol Difference
Structural characteristics
Policosanol is not a single component, but a mixture of a group of higher fatty alcohols. Its main components include octacosanol, triacontanol, hexacosanol, etc. These fatty alcohols are straight-chain saturated monohydric alcohols with different carbon chain lengths, generally containing 20 to 34 carbon atoms. Because it is a mixture of multiple alcohols, its chemical properties are relatively complex, and the overall performance is typical of fatty alcohols, such as good solubility in organic solvents and almost insoluble in water. For example, in some studies, the use of organic solvents such as chloroform and ether can effectively extract policosanol from raw materials such as sugarcane wax.

Octacosanol, that is, 1-octacosanol, has a clear chemical structure with a chemical formula of C₂₈H₅₈O. It is a saturated monohydric alcohol with a straight-chain structure of 28 carbon atoms. This single molecular structure makes the properties of octacosanol relatively stable and easy to study. Its physical properties are white powder or flaky crystals, tasteless and odorless. The melting point is 83.2 - 83.6℃ (purity ≥97%), the boiling point is 175℃ (2.7Pa), 190℃ (10Pa), 227℃ (100Pa), and the specific gravity is 0.783g/cm³ (85℃). Similar to policosanol, it is soluble in hot ethanol, ether, benzene, toluene, chloroform, dichloromethane, petroleum ether and other organic solvents, insoluble in water, and stable to acid, alkali, reducing agent, light and heat, and not easy to absorb moisture.
Extraction source
Policosanol is mainly extracted from the wax of sugarcane epidermis and sugarcane leaves. Deodorized distillates of some vegetable oils, rice bran wax, etc. can also be used as raw materials for extracting policosanol, but policosanol from sugarcane is more common in the market.

Octacosanol is widely distributed in nature. In the plant kingdom, it exists in the lipids of plant roots, stems, leaves, shells, and seeds in a bound state (in the form of wax esters) or free state. In industrial production, rice bran wax and sugarcane wax are usually used as the main raw materials to extract octacosanol.
Although policosanol is a mixture of long-chain fatty alcohols, octacosanol is its main and most abundant component.
Application efficacy
Both policosanol and octacosanol have the potential to reduce cholesterol, blood lipids, systolic blood pressure and improve body metabolism.
In addition, policosanol can activate AMPK, inhibit glycosylation and oxidation, reduce aldosterone release, help reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and play a comprehensive protective role on the cardiovascular system.

Octacosanol can improve endurance, energy and physical strength, improve the body's athletic ability and fatigue resistance, and is recognized by the world as an anti-fatigue substance. Octacosanol can also improve reaction sensitivity and stress resistance, helping the body to better cope with external stimuli. At the same time, it also has certain effects in promoting the action of sex hormones, reducing muscle pain, and improving myocardial function.
