Dihydrooat alkaloids supplementation increased superoxide dismutase activity in thigh muscle, liver, and kidney, and increased glutathione peroxidase activity in thigh muscle and heart. Exercise can increase oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species in muscle and myocardium, and accelerate the peroxidation of the heart, liver and muscle. Dihydrooat alkaloids can alleviate the production of reactive oxygen species caused by exercise in muscle and reduce fat peroxidation in the heart.
This suggests that dihydrooat alkaloids can be added to the diet as potent antioxidants.
