What is Curcumin ?

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric. In Indian and Asian cultures, turmeric and curcumin have a long history of use as a traditional herbal medicine, and Western medicine is beginning to study the potential of turmeric in treating diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Here is the extraction process and production flow of curcumin:

Raw material selection Curcumin is mainly extracted from turmeric rhizomes. Therefore, high-quality turmeric rhizomes should be selected as raw materials for extraction.
Pretreatment Turmeric rhizomes are cleaned, peeled, and sliced into small pieces before being dried at a low temperature to remove moisture.
Extraction The dried turmeric slices are ground into a fine powder and then mixed with a solvent, such as ethanol or acetone, to extract curcumin. The extraction can be performed using various methods, such as ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, or supercritical fluid extraction.
Purification and concentration The crude extract contains impurities and needs to be purified and concentrated to obtain high-purity curcumin. Methods such as column chromatography, liquid-liquid separation, and recrystallization can be used to purify curcumin.
Drying and packaging The purified curcumin is dried and packaged to prevent moisture and oxidation, ensuring long-term preservation.
