Capsaicin is a compound in chili peppers, which has a burning and stimulating effect. Pure capsaicin is a hydrophilic, colorless, odorless crystalline or waxy compound.
The applications of capsaicin range from food flavorings to therapeutics. Usually, capsaicin is used in food additives, Marine antifouling coatings, anti-ant and anti-rat in wire and cable, etc. In addition, it is also used in medicine and health care, with the effects of analgesic, weight-loss, antipruritic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and so on.
Capsaicin has previously been shown to have anticancer effects, but its heat can also cause burning sensation, gastrospasm, intestinal pain and nausea. Recently, in a new study, a non irritating synthetic substance called Avanil, which is made from capsaicin can cause the death of small cell lung cancer and slow down the growth of tumor in mice. It is worth noting that: small cell lung cancer is a rapidly growing, highly invasive cancer, the survival rate of patients is very low.
In the future, capsaicin may be used together with standard chemotherapy drugs to develop better combination therapy for patients with small cell lung cancer.
